Jewelry Care Tips

We want you to enjoy your Oh Funky jewelry for a long time. That's why we've put together a few jewelry care tips here.

Care of brass jewelry

Like most jewelry, brass jewelry requires proper care to maintain its radiant beauty and shine. Here are some tips:

Avoid moisture: Brass can tarnish from moisture and water stains. Therefore, store it in a dry place and remove your jewelry before showering, bathing, or swimming. Always store it in a dry place.

Avoid direct contact with sweat and perfume, as this can cause discoloration. Put on your brass jewelry only after applying perfume, cream, etc., and clean it carefully after wearing.

Clean your brass jewelry regularly to prevent tarnishing and discoloration. A silver polishing cloth, available at any drugstore, is ideal. Polishing paste for silver or brass is also very effective. Simply apply, polish, then wipe with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. We offer a super effective, easy-to-use cleaning tool for brass jewelry in our shop. You can find it here .

Store it separately: Keep your brass jewelry in a separate pouch or jewelry box to avoid scratches and friction.

Polish it up: To restore the shine to your brass jewelry, you can use a brass polish as described above. Be sure to wipe it off carefully so that no residue remains.

If your brass jewelry has oxidized and developed a darker patina, you can consider this part of its charm. Many brass jewelry enthusiasts like and appreciate the darker look. And if you want to bring back its shine, now you know how!

Care of jewelry made of acrylic and acetate

Acrylic jewelry should generally be handled with a bit more care, as this otherwise robust material tends to scratch the surface. The same applies to cellulose acetate, which is somewhat less sensitive than acrylic. If you get fingerprints on the surface, you can simply wipe your jewelry with a soft cloth, such as a lens cleaning cloth. Avoid using hard brushes or similar items.

Please avoid contact between any kind of chemical (e.g., chlorine) or cosmetic products such as sunscreen and your acrylic or acetate jewelry. Perfume is generally fine, but you should avoid harsh cleaning agents. Water is not a problem for either material, but please remove your jewelry before showering, bathing, or swimming. This applies to all jewelry, except for waterproof stainless steel jewelry. More information on that below.

To protect the surface from friction, it's best to store your acrylic jewelry separately from other jewelry, for example in a soft pouch or box. Properly protected, your jewelry will stay beautiful and fresh for longer.

Care of stainless steel jewelry

Are you wondering why your stainless steel jewelry looks so dull and discolored and has lost its shine? This is perfectly normal, because over time and with frequent wear, the jewelry comes into contact with things like cosmetics, sweat, or water. This, in turn, can cause the surface of the jewelry to become darker or dull and/or discolored. The good news: There are a few simple home remedies that are very effective at restoring the shine to your stainless steel jewelry.

The brilliant thing about stainless steel is that it's not only hypoallergenic, but also a very robust metal for jewelry, and even waterproof. You can even wear it while swimming, because it doesn't rust.

Cleaning stainless steel jewelry is also easier than cleaning gold and silver. Generally, you should always use very soft materials when cleaning your jewelry to avoid scratching it. Depending on how often and how long you wear your favorite pieces, they should be gently cleaned regularly.

What home remedies do we recommend for cleaning? You can easily remove stubborn dirt with dish soap and water. Fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of dish soap. Then place your stainless steel jewelry in the water bath. Depending on the severity of the dirt, let your necklace soak for 10 to 30 minutes. Afterward, rinse it again under cold water and then clean small corners and crevices with a cotton swab. Finally, dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.

After cleaning, it's very important to polish your stainless steel jewelry so it sparkles and shines. Polishing cotton works well for this, but regular cotton wool from the drugstore will also do. Always polish your jewelry gently and without applying too much pressure.

Care of jewelry made of gold-plated sterling silver

Gold-plated sterling silver jewelry is best polished with a soft velour cloth. Always store jewelry made of this material safely in a jewelry box.

Care of textile jewelry

Our fabric jewelry requires special care. To ensure you enjoy your fabric jewelry for a long time, always store it well protected from moisture, dust, and pet hair. Should a stain or soiling occur, please clean it carefully by hand using a mild detergent, stain remover, or dish soap. To do this, dampen a cloth, apply a small amount of cleaning agent, and gently dab the soiled area. Then rinse again with clean, lukewarm water and allow to dry. Hand washing is generally possible and no problem!

Storage tips:

Generally speaking:

Proper care of your jewelry is very important so you can enjoy it for a long time. You should keep your jewelry away from chemicals and cosmetic products and clean it thoroughly, especially after exposure to sweat. This can happen more often in the summer and also if you have worn your jewelry for an extended period. Soap residue, salt residue, and chlorine residue can also damage your jewelry, so always clean it well to keep it looking like new.

To protect your jewelry from dust, when storing it, make sure to wrap it in a cloth or place it directly in a jewelry box .
